Hi all,
This is my first zbrush image and I'm having a ball. I also have a lot of questions.
Is there anyway to apply a second texture to an imported Obj file without redoing the UV coordinates?
Can you apply textures to any channels apart from colour? Eg can you apply a bump map, displacement map or specular map?
Is there anyway to create sharper shadows?
Can you import an obj file with face/vertex colouring intact?
Is there anyway to paint directly into a texture with more than polygon by polygon accuracy?
Feel free to criticise, although it was more of a learning exercise than anything else.
ciao

Hi Johnartbox,
I really like this image. Reminds me of an image that could be in a Disney flick. Actually, I just went to see 'Shrek' and this image looks like a background scene from the movie. Great work.
Tips, tips. ;)
Wow super image, I am enjoying it very much. As for your questions I am sure ZuZu will be popping in soon thou you may find some of your answeres in the FAQ forum or the Quicklink button at the top of the page. Southern has written a good tutorial on Materials on his web site, you can find his link by going to my Z-Place website (see link below my signature) He is also working right now on importing Poser figures and maps which may answer some of our questions.
Anyhoo, babble babble, hope to see more of your work

Hi JohnArtBox, and Welcome to ZBrush Central!
To answer your questions...
>Is there anyway to apply a second texture to an imported Obj file without
redoing the UV coordinates?
>Can you apply textures to any channels apart
from colour? Eg can you apply a bump map, displacement map or specular map?
This is being considered for future releases of ZBrush.
In 1.23 there is a feature that will allow you to combine several 3D objects, each with its own texture, into one object with all of the UV coordinates adjusted to fit within one
larger texture.
>Is there anyway to create sharper shadows?
In 1.23 there is a Blur slider with 1-8 values for shadow blur.
>Can you import an obj file with face/vertex colouring intact?
If you import a mesh with a texture, you can use the Texture to vertex function in order to colorize the polygons based on the texture coloring.
>Is there anyway to paint directly into a texture with more than polygon by polygon accuracy?
The best method for texturing is explained in the "Texturing made Easy" tutorial.
Using this method, the painting is pixol-based and it is not limited by the polygon count.

Beautiful first image!

Thanks ZuZu
Unfortunately I reposted and then when I bounced out I saw you had answered many of my questions.
I'll try the texturing tutorial on the weekend when I get through my commercial workload.
I know how to apply the texture to an obj file but I'm trying to import obj files from plant studio, which will automatically colour vertices/faces but does not apply textures. In many cases for plants this provides a good enough colour surface.
Any chance of 3ds import in the next version?
Thanks
John
