It's a really interesting technique, but it would be quicker in most cases to model directly as a relief.

Read Eduard Lanteris' book on sculpting the human form. It has a big section on relief modelling....

A friend asked me to make a Whale, I was happy to make one. I just slightly did it more in a fantasy way.
